Now in it’s ninth year, the CSSV Mission Inspired Leadership Program 2024 has been an opportunity for leaders across our sector to be encouraged and invigorated in their work as we collectively seek to enact the gospel within social service settings. Twenty seven attendees from across all Australian states and territories, as well as a participant from New Zealand, joined the Mission Inspired Leadership 2024 cohort.
We were thrilled to have had such a high calibre of presenters who generously shared their time and expertise covering the four topic areas of the program.
Lawrie Hallinan, former Executive Director of the Association for Ministerial Public Juridic Persons, kicked off the first session by unpacking the topic ‘Engage and Collaborate in the Catholic social care ecosystem’. He provided an insightful overview of the various structures of the Catholic Church, the Church’s social mission and the opportunities that exist for collaboration across the Church’s various services and organisations.
Session two of the program was facilitated by Fr Bruce Duncan CSsR, a Redemptorist Priest, academic and author, along with Pip McIlroy, Manager, People and Leadership Development at Jesuit Social Services. Bruce and Pip presented on ‘Keeping to Principle – how to apply purposeful Catholic social principles to social services at the coalface’. Bruce provided fantastic insights into how Catholic Social Teaching can be embedded in social services settings, with Pip facilitating reflective practice and providing discernment and decision-making tools that participants can apply in their various roles.
Dr Lisa McDonald, founder and facilitator of Gathering of Three, ably led the third session of the program which looked at ‘True to Purpose – how to keep Catholic social services on mission’. Lisa focused on the importance of mission in Catholic agencies and how this can be held as central in all organisational practices.
In the final session Jayne Lloyd OAM, CEO at CatholicCare NT, presented on ‘Delivering Social Impact Sustainably – how to thrive together for the common good’. Jayne shared examples from her own organisational setting and how a mission and place-based focus has led to organisational growth over many years.
The program is designed to include peer learning, with each session allowing participants to have discussions in smaller groups, sharing their expertise and experience with others across the sector. Participants were also provided with hardcopy resources that can be referred to into the future.
We wish to particularly thank each of the program presenters for all they contributed to the program this year, and we wish to also express our gratitude to Catholic Development Fund who generously supported the program.
CSSV plans to offer the Mission Inspired Leadership Program again in 2025. More information will be available later in the year.
