Exploring themes of injustice during Reconciliation Week

Focussing on the theme ‘More than a word. Reconciliation Takes Action’, the 2021 National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June) highlighted the role we all play in fostering reconciliation and in collectively building relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ histories, cultures, and futures.

During Reconciliation Week, the Mercy Hub in North Carlton hosted a nation-wide Zoom event, which included the screening of TED Talk by Ingrid Cummings, Two Worlds. Attendees learnt about Ingrid’s experience of growing up in both indigenous and non-indigenous Australia.

There was deep discussion about the importance of acknowledging over 300 indigenous groups across Australia and how this already made up a multicultural Australia prior to colonisation. It was also raised that “reconciliation needs to happen on a personal level…and by using the power that we have to call out and challenge systemic injustice”.

Due to COVID restrictions, several of the Hub’s Reconciliation Week programs were cancelled, however they were grateful to have reached many organisations, schools, and people through online platforms.
